The author, known by the pen name Hai Zhi Tao, is also identified as Zhang Tao (Chinese) and John Chang (English). He was born in January 1961 in Beijing, China. He studied at Beijing No. 51 Middle School, the Wuhan Air Force Radar Institute, Beijing Textile Engineering Institute, TAFE Sydney, and the University of Technology Sydney (UTS).
Due to strong dissatisfaction with traditional education systems characterized by rote learning and credential-oriented training, he withdrew from multiple institutions and pursued independent study. Over the years, he developed deep interests in philosophy, physics, astronomy, religion, and economics, with particular attention to foundational questions about knowledge, structure, and reality.
After moving to Australia in 1990, he began exploring religious systems in depth. While initially unfamiliar with religion, he studied various traditions and participated in church activities.
He also studied economics, particularly stock market behavior, developing a strong interest in financial systems. and collective human dynamics.
A turning point came on September 11, 2001, when the attacks on the World Trade Center prompted him to deeply reflect on human society, religion, science, and the nature of reality. Shortly thereafter, during a fishing trip by the sea, he observed raindrops striking the water surface and generating expanding waves — an insight that led to what he describes as the realization of a fundamental “universal law.”
He spent two years writing his first major work, Universal Law, published in November 2003. Including the years of prior conceptual accumulation, the development of this work spanned nearly two decades. The book represents an attempt to unify scientific and philosophical understanding within a single structural framework.
Following this, he established several institutions dedicated to promoting his theoretical system worldwide, including: Universal Law Research Society; Universal Law Academy; Universal Publishing; Universal Law Art Institute.
His work has since expanded into a large-scale theoretical project aimed at unifying mathematics, physics, chemistry, and broader systems of knowledge under a structural framework based on recursive and generative principles.
